I intended to just do small cow studies today as I know I’ll want to inject them in my landscapes. This piece started out as just 3 cows then decided to borrow design elements from Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot painting to give them a home. Have now modified my limited palette to 5 colours – Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Lemon Yellow, Yellow Ochre and Zinc White.

Decided to change up the Zorn palette and try a different 4 colours. Lemon yellow, burnt sienna, white and Ultramarine Blue. This small oil alla prima still life doesn’t represent the huge range you can get from these 4 colours which by adding an additional red such as cad red deep you get a large variety of beautiful oranges and purples. Think I will adopt this as my limited plein air palette.
